“Are India’s promises to Paris climate conference achievable and how?”
Objective of the competition:
** The recent Paris Climate Conference stressed the urgent need to tackle the impending global climate change crisis by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions.
** India has promised to the Paris climate conference that it would build total renewable capacity of 175 GW by 2022 and create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonne of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030.
** Considering the past track record in India with regard to capacity build up, land acquisition issues, technology challenges and the fact that several measures to achieve the target are still in the planning stage in the beginning of the year 2016, it appears that it would be a herculean task for India to reach the promised target by 2022.
** Government of India is moving ahead to chalk out plans and implement the same with high level of urgency.
** The objective of the essay competition is to encourage the students to think on the subject and provide their views and suggestions on whether India could achieve the targets and how it could be achieved.
