Here’s your window to the world of travel writing.

What are we looking for?:
** Don’t just write a log about a recent holiday. Tell us a story about your journey.
** Every story should have hallmarks of National Geographic Traveller–immersive travel and authentic storytelling
** Capture the essence of the place in a way that will inspire readers to embark on their adventure.
** It should be a true story of a personal experience written in first person.

Last date: 30 August 2015

Word length: 400-800 words

Entries should be accompanied by: Name, postal address, email address, and phone number. Indicate if you have been published before; specify when and where.

Multiple entries are welcome, as long as they are sent as separate emails.

Prize:
Results will be declared in the February 2016 issue. The best entry will be published in National Geographic Traveller India and on our website.

The winner also gets to go on an assignment for National Geographic Traveller India.

Terms & Conditions:
By entering the competition you agree to be bound by its terms & conditions. Read the entire list below:
** The competition is open to Indian residents 18 years or over. Employees of National Geographic Traveller India (“NGT”), its regular contributors, and those working with the parent company Amar Chitra Katha Private Limited (“the Company”) are not eligible to participate.

** The competition is launched on 1 July, 2015. All entries must be received by midnight IST on 30 August, 2015.

** To enter the competition, submit a piece of writing between 400 and 800 words in length, which is a true story based on your personal experience written as a first-hand account in first person. You may send more than one entry in separate emails.

** Your personal data may be used for promotional or marketing purposes.

** The first prize will be awarded to the entry that the Judges consider to be the best based on the quality of writing and adherence to the principles of National Geographic Traveller India. The winning entry will be featured in National Geographic Traveller India and on its website www.natgeotraveller.in.

** All submissions must be previously unpublished, original work and must not contain third-party work or infringe the copyright of any third party and must not be obscene, defamatory or in breach of any legislation or regulation. The person submitting an entry must have the full right and authority to sell the manuscript. The rights to the manuscript submitted must has not have been previously have been granted, sold, hypothecated, to any other print or online publication.

** By submitting a manuscript in the competition, the person submitting the entry maintains that the words are not taken without acknowledgement from any written source, will contain nothing of a libellous or defamatory nature, and that its publication will not infringe any copyright, right of privacy, or other proprietary right of any other party. If any entries are in breach of this clause, we reserve the right to exclude such entries and the participants shall be liable to indemnify the Company against, but not limited to, any damages, claims, losses borne / suffered or expenses incurred by the Company.

** All submissions shall become the property of the Companies (both National Geographic Society and Amar Chitra Katha Pvt. Ltd) and all rights, copyright, interest or title in the stories shall rest with the Company in perpetuity. The Company is at the liberty to use such stories in any of its publications with credit to the participant and edit them suitably for the purpose. The participant may not submit or publish the same story or derivatives of it or any story arising out of this travel for any other publication, website or competing entity.

** In addition to being featured, the Winner will have the opportunity to travel for and write a short piece that will appear in National Geographic Traveller India and its website. The story and destination will be of the Editor’s choosing. There will be no fee or compensation payable for this and the publication of the commissioned piece shall be at the Editor’s discretion.

** The Winner is responsible for organising valid permissions, health insurance, etc for the travel. They will also be liable for any costs incurred outside of the travel, stay, and meals paid for as part of the prize, including but not limited to all beverages, spending money, laundry, phone calls, and meals and travel outside what is stipulated. Transport to departure destination in India is not included.

** By undertaking the winning trip, the winner agrees to write a travel story for National Geographic Traveller India of a word length that will be determined by the Editor at the time of the assignment. The Writer’s work on this assignment will be considered incomplete until the Editor confirms that the manuscript is acceptable. The Writer covenants that if the first draft of the Article, as presented, is not acceptable to National Geographic Traveller India, the Writer will rewrite it under the direction of National Geographic Traveller India’s editorial staff. National Geographic Traveller India reserves the right to edit the article as it sees fit.

** The Writer further agrees to cooperate with National Geographic Traveller India’s editorial staff in verifying the accuracy of the manuscript before publication and make him/herself available for consultation in the preparation of story’s various components including photo captions, information boxes, etc, if required. This new manuscript will also be under exclusive copyright of National Geographic Society and Amar Chitra Katha Pvt. Ltd., its affiliates and licensees worldwide royalty-free rights, and perpetual licence to display, distribute, reproduce and create derivatives of such photographs, in whole or in part and in any medium, for editorial, commercial, promotional, and/or trade purposes.

** The Company shall have the right to publish the manuscript in print or on the Internet or other digital media either by itself or in part with any other package or on the website of National Geographic Traveller India or any other magazines owned or licensed by the Publisher or to any other publication of its choosing. All income or revenues arising by publishing and/or exploiting the manuscript will accrue only to the Company and the Writer shall not have any claim over the same of any nature whatsoever. Above rights shall be available to Amar Chitra Katha Pvt Ltd. in perpetuity.

** The decision of the Judges shall be final and binding. The prizes are non-transferable, non-exchangeable, and cannot be redeemed for cash. In the event of a cancellation by the Winner, no alternative prize or travel dates will be offered.

** If the Winner is unable to claim the prize for any reason, or we are unable to make contact despite reasonable effort, we reserve the right to offer the prize to an alternative winner. In such a case, the first winner will not be eligible for the prize any longer and the Company will not be liable.

** We reserve the right to change any of the rules of this competition while it is running if it appears appropriate to do so, including extending the closing date.

** The competition shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the applicable laws in India. All disputes or claims arising out of or in connection with or relating to this competition shall be subject to exclusive jurisdiction of courts at Mumbai.
