Regional Mathematical Olympiad:
The Mathematical Olympiad Programme in India, which leads to participation of Indian pre-college/pre-university students in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), is organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.

Five Stages of the Mathematical Olympiad:
Stage 1 : Regional Mathematical Olympiad
The RMO is a three-hour written test with six or seven problems, held sometime during September to December each year. On the basis of the performance in RMO, a certain number of students from each region is selected for the INMO. This number is typically 30 to 35 from West Bengal, but may vary from year to year, depending on the national-level policy.
The Regional Coordinators are in charge of conducting the RMO in their respective regions. In West Bengal, a Pre-RMO examination is held before the RMO, to select students who may appear for RMO that year.
Stage 2 : Indian National Mathematical Olympiad
The INMO is a four-hour written test with six or seven problems, typically held during the third or fourth week of January each year. On the basis of the performance in INMO, the top 30-35 students in merit from all over the country (typically out of about 500 students appearing for INMO) are chosen as INMO Awardees.
The next 45-50 students who are in Class X or lower and have done well in INMO, but have not qualified as INMO Awardee, are awarded INMO Certificate of Merit. These stduents are eligible to appear for next year’s INMO directly, without qualifying RMO again.
Stage 3 : IMO Training Camp
The INMO Awardees (top 30-35 students from INMO) are invited to a month long training camp in April-May each year at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Mumbai. The INMO Awardess of the previous years who are still eligible for IMO, and who have satisfactorily gone through postal tuition throughout the year, are also invited to the training camp.
On the basis of a number of selection tests throughout the duration of the Training Camp, a team of six top students is selected from the combined pool of participants (typically 50-60).
Stage 4 : Pre-departure Training Camp for IMO
The team of six students selected from the IMO Training Camp goes through another round of training and orientation for about ten days prior to departure for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), typically in June or July every year. This is the penultimate stage of the Olympiad Programme, where the six-member team is groomed to represent India in the international arena.
Stage 5 : International Mathematical Olympiad
The IMO consists of two tests held on two consecutive days — each test consisting of three problems, with a time-limit of four and half hours. The six-member team selected at the end of IMO Training Camp, accompanied by a leader, a deputy leader and an observer, represents India at the International Mathematical Olympiad, held in July each year in a different member country. India has been participating in the IMO since 1989.
