NLIU Media Law Essay Competition 2015:
The Cell for Studies in Media Law, NLIU Bhopal is organizing the ‘NLIU Media Law Essay Competition, 2015’, to be adjudged by the Alternative Law Forum.

About Cell For Studies In Media Law:
The Cell for Studies in Media Laws was established with the aim to promote research, debate and dialogue on legal and ethical issues related to media and to inculcate a spirit of scholarly discussion among the student body.

About Alternative Law Forum:
ALF is a space that integrates alternative lawyering with critical research, alternative dispute resolution, pedagogic interventions and more generally maintaining sustained legal interventions in various social issues.

ALF provides qualitative legal services to marginalized groups, as an autonomous research institution with a strong interdisciplinary approach working with practitioners from other fields, as a public legal resource using conventional and unconventional forms of creating access to information, as a centre for generating quality resources that will make interventions in legal education and training, and as finally a platform to enable collaborative and creative models of knowledge production.

Topics For The Competition:
1. Should there be nothing offensive about the right to offend?
2. Whoever controls the media controls the mind. When paid news masquerades as real news, what is the price of the truth in the media?
3. The importance of net neutrality and a free and open internet.
4. The press is there to “inform, educate and entertain”. While doing so it is meant to be “irreverent, unruly and opinionated”, (Lord Justice Leveson, An Inquiry into the Culture, Cell for Studies in Media Law, National Law Institute University, Kerwa Dam road, Bhopal, India- 462044 Email: medialawcell.nliu@gmail.com Practices and Ethics of the Press, Executive Summary, November 2012, at p. 6). Does the Indian media need to be regulated? Who will regulate the media?
5. “…there ought to exist the fullest liberty of professing and discussing, as a matter of ethical conviction, any doctrine, however immoral it may be considered.”- John Stuart Mill Keeping in view the dynamic understanding of ‘obscenity’, is the law protecting the freedom of speech and expression of the content creators?

A separate “Title of essay” should be framed by the author based on the topic selected from above.

Eligibility Criteria:
Undergraduate students (Three year or Five Year Law Course)
Postgraduate students (LL.M.)

Submission Guidelines:
** A soft copy of the essay should be submitted by e-mail to medialawcell.nliu@gmail.com. The subject of email shall be medialawessay.nliu@gmail.com.
** Essays should be in English. Only original essays (not published earlier or extracted from other sources) will be accepted. Violation of this rule will result in immediate disqualification.
** The essay should be between 2000 to 4000 words (inclusive of footnotes).The essay is to be submitted in MS Word format, font Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5 line spacing. The footnote font size shall be 10 with line spacing 1. Style of citation to be used is Bluebook Citation (19th Edition 2010). A margin of 1 inch must be left on all four sides.
** Co-authorship to the extent of one co-author is permitted.
** The email must contain the name of the author(s), name of the institution, year of study, contact address and phone number.The body of the essay should not contain any mention of the name of the author(s), contact details, or name of the institution. Entries found to be in violation of this rule will be disqualified.

Miscellaneous Rules:
** Copyright to all the essays sent as entries for this competition shall rest with the Cell for Studies in Media and Law, however, authors shall be given due credit in the by-line. The Cell shall have the right to publish the articles in the form of a journal or a book.
** The Organizing Committee reserves the absolute rights to cancel, defer, or postpone indefinitely, the competition in the event of the accruing of any incident, natural or man-made.
** The Organizing Committee reserves the right to decline to award any or all prizes in the event of a failure of entries to reach in an appropriate standard.
** In case of any dispute, decision of the Organizing Committee shall be final & binding.

Last Date for Submissions: 14th November 2015 (11:59 pm).
Tentative Date for Declaration of Results: 14th December 2015

Evaluation Process:
Evaluation process shall consist of a plagiarism check. Entries found plagiarized shall be immediately disqualified. The entries will then be sent to Alternative Law Forum for the content evaluation.

Marking Scheme:
** The essays will be adjudged on the basis of: Originality and Contribution to Knowledge; Clarity and Logic in Analysis; Language; Structuring of the Essay; Methodology of Research.
** The top three entries will be awarded prizes. The top entries may be published in the form of a journal by the Cell.

Prizes:
1st Prize: Rs. 5000
2nd Prize: Rs. 3000
3rd Prize: Rs. 2000

Additionally, ‘special mention’ certificates would be announced on the recommendation of the panel of judges.
Certificates of Participation will be given to all participants.
