Aihole, the cultural capital and Pattadakal, its educational capital (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) have not yet seen the rightful inflow of tourists. In contrast, Hampi just 90 kms away attracts ten times the number of tourists.
The Design Competition looks to invite Responsive and Sustainable idea that can once again bring back the spotlight on Badami precinct, which has all the makings of a world-class destination for tourism, culture and heritage.
Badami Precinct:
Nestled around the majestic rocky outcrop of the town of Badami, Sidlaphadhi caves with their prehistoric cave paintings, Kendur Lake, Mahakuta Temple complex, Shivayogi Mandir, home to the ancient manuscript library and the popular Banashankari Temple tie up as a coherent chain of interest for tourists to explore.
The charm and old world feel of the Badami precinct could be restored by driving urbanisation to the close by Bagalkot city, making Badami precinct a wonderful day trip destination.
Framework of the Design Competition:
Holistic Design Proposals for the rejuvenation of the Badami Historic precinct (approx. 6 x 6 kms) that circles the ecologically sensitive majestic outcrop from Badami town, Sidlaphadi prehistoric cave painting site, Kendur lake, Mahakuta temple, Shivayoga Mandir (ancient manuscript library) and turning back to Badami via Bhanashankari Temple. (map enclosed)
Consortium based approach that combines expertise of Architects, Designers, Planners, Business professionals, Engineers, Sociologists, Environmentalists, Artists and Students.
The design proposal to work within a budget of INR 50.0 Crores (8 Million USD) as total implementation cost including land acquisition (if any), feasibility study and actual implementation.
Issues to be addressed:
1. The design to outline a Macro approach, long term framework to rejuvenate the precinct and simultaneously an immediately implementable project. Any meaningful intervention will have to have a long-term and an immediate perspective working in synergy with each other.
2. Work with the current physical and social characteristics of the area to improve the physical character to bring back the erstwhile glory of the historic precinct. The people inhabiting the towns, addressing issues such as encroachments by tenements adjoining the historic cave sites, sub-standard public infrastructure such as Bus station, Railway station, toilets etc.
3. Encourage new interventions into the fabric, while respecting the rich heritage
4. To factor in the proposed University of Fine Arts this is soon going to be set up in Badami, about 8 kilometers from the monument sites. It will have five thousand students and staff from across the world.
5. Discourage rapid urbanization of Badami town to retain its charm and small town character that would encourage tourism by encouraging hotels, resorts and urban growth in Bagalkot city which is only 28 Kms away. Bagalkot is the district headquarters and is the largest Urban centre in the District. Good connectivity to Bagalkot would make Badami an ideal day trip destination.
6. Mahakuta is a beautiful temple complex where a natural water stream flows through the complex and is manifested in a stepped kund(well) used by deities for holy ablutions. It is only a three kilometer trek over the rocky outcrop from Badami and could become an important destination in the proposed tourist circuit of Sidlaphadi prehistoric cave painting site, Kendur lake, Mahakuta temple, Shivayoga Mandir (ancient manuscript library) and Bhanashankari temple.
7. There are a few hundred wooden Tongas (traditional horse carts) for ferrying people in and around Badami town. These could be refurbished and introduced in a big way of providing an eco-friendly mode of transportation for visitors and locals alike.
Proposed University of Fine Arts, Badami:
