AGORA Students’ Design Competition 2015:
This design competition is aimed at looking for creative solutions to solving the housing problem for people displaced by various natural or man-made disasters. Student teams from the field of Architecture, Engineering and Design are invited to design a rapidly deployable shelter for use by people struck by such disasters. The AGORA 2015 Design Competition is a response to the Kashmir floods and Nepal Earthquake earlier this year.
Design Guidelines:
Scenario:
This year the competition will require students to design an immediate shelter for disaster struck areas. This immediate shelter should be able to convert into an intermediate shelter or a permanent shelter if required. Keeping in mind various disasters which have been affecting the populations around the world, these shelters should be able to adapt to the surroundings and living needs of people of various cultures.
Standards:
Designs should meet Sphere Standards and other appropriate internationally accepted standards (located at https://spherestandards.org/.
Accommodation Requirements:
The shelter:
** Shall accommodate a family of 4-6 with a minimum allocation of 3.5 square meters of space per person.
** Height must allow standing head clearance of 2 meters for at least 70% of the floor space.
** Take into account potential cultural considerations or sensitivities.
** Provide protection from extremely hot summers, rains and extreme cold.
** Should allow adequate airflow and ventilation
** Can be erected in a variety of topographical and geographical conditions
** The structure should be reusable
** Must be upgradable to something more permanent by the shelter users, using local materials, techniques, and skills
** Should be cost-effective: INR 1,50,000 or less to fabricate
** Should be lightweight: Overall weight should be minimized, ideally no more than 200kg per package to allow easier handling.
** Should be easy and rapid to assemble without technical experience.
Eligibility of Entry:
** Applicants must be under-graduate or post-graduate students.
** Team participation of not more than 2 students per team is allowed
** Individual participation is allowed.
Submission Requirements:
** A minimum of two A1 sheets with legible drawings and/or graphs and/or charts and/or text.
** Only entries in English language are allowed.
** Proper sourcing and credits are imperative
