Nandini Voice for the Deprived, ( nandinivoice.com ),is organising an All India Essay Competition on the above subject.
Objectives of the competition:
** The concerned Indians are frustrated that persons widely known to be corrupt or to have indulged in criminal practices are allowed to contest elections. Many of these persons win the elections by hoodwinking the electorate by money power or muscle power and some of them even become ministers ruling the country.
** Some people appear to be of the view that Election Commission, which is a constitutional body with wide powers and responsibilities to ensure free and fair elections, has reduced itself to be a “paper tiger” by mechanically going through the process of elections without taking effective steps to prevent the persons with corruption or criminal background from contesting the elections.
** The election commissioners have been consistently saying for the last several years that the powers of the Election Commission are limited. Election Commission appears to be looking upto the courts to deal with such matters. On the other hand, some people seem to think that Election Commission is as much a constitutional body as the judiciary and it has to use its powers which may not be obvious and which are inherent due to the responsibilities given to it.
** The objective of the competition is to provide an opportunity to the citizens to express their view and provide their suggestions on the subject. Highlights of the views and suggestions would be submitted to the President of India, Chief Election Commissioner and Prime Minister.
