Inter-State Declamation Contest:
The 2nd Annual Inter-State (North Zone) Declamation Contest is being organized on 30th November 2016 on the serine campus of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra. The event is designed with a view to inculcating among youth sensitivity about the emergent social issues, to promote critical thinking and ability to rationally reflect upon those issues.

The idea and inspiration behind the event is of none other than Sh. N. N. Vohra, the Hon’ble Governor of Jammu & Kashmir State and Chancellor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra. The Rolling Trophy of the event is also instituted by him. The participants will have opportunity to interact with and learn from the students participating from different universities/institutions of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan.
The Theme: Does Religion defy rationality
The theme of the present declamation contest is Does religion defy rationality? It is chosen in view of one of the major crises of the contemporary society, i.e., understanding of religion as irrational or vice versa (rationality as irreligious). The theme is an invitation to question and think about the need of a clear and apt understanding of religion such that it is not mistaken for fundamentalism, religious fanaticism or communalism.
Guidelines:
1. Only two students (speakers) will be allowed from one university/institution. He/she should be a bona fide student of UG/PG program of the university/institution. Research Scholars are not allowed.
2. The medium of speech will be English or Hindi. Citing any idiom or clause from other language is admissible only if contextually unavoidable.
3. The maximum time allowed will be 5 minutes. The warning bell will sound after 4 minutes and the final bell after 5 minutes.
4. If a candidate fails to present him/her-self after announcement of his/her name within 1 minute, he/she will be marked absent.
5. Paper reading will not be allowed. The participants will not be allowed to read out his/her speech.
6. The decision of the judges will be final and binding upon all.
7. Any act of indiscipline on the part of the participant(s) during the contest may tantamount to disqualification.
8. The participants will have to abide by any other suitable instruction given by the organizers during the event.
Criteria for Judgment:
a) Content: Relevance of the matter to the chosen topic
b) Diction: Vocal variety and voice variation
c) Stage Presence: Gestures and expression supporting and emphasizing the verbal content of the speech
d) Presentation: Overall effectiveness and articulation
The Silver Rolling Trophy will be awarded to the winning speaker with the highest marks (individual). However, the original trophy will be retained by the host institution after the event and in lieu of that another trophy (replica) will be awarded to the winning participant which he/she can carry along with him/her. Second and third position holders will also be awarded along with two consolation prizes. The best team will also get a certificate and trophy for the institution.
Facilities:
The participating speakers will be reimbursed TA from their station/institution to Jammu and back (second class sleeper train fair or bus fair), however, they will be provided local transport (from Jammu to SMVDU campus and back), accommodation and hospitality. There is no registration fee for the event. No teacher-in-charge/accompanist is allowed with the participants. All the participants will be given participation certificates and participation mementos.
Registration Form and Contact:
All the participants are required to fill the registration form (attached with the letter) mentioning travel details and duly authenticated by the Dean of Students Welfare/concerned officer of the participating university/institute. The form should reach the following address by 31st October, 2016.
