This is regarding celebration of Matribhasha Diwas on 21 February, 2018. UNESCO had declared 21st February every year as International Mother Language Day to promote the dissemination of mother tongues and fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

Objectives

It has been decided to celebrate Matribhasha Diwas on 21.2.2018 to promote the use of mother tongue. The tenor would be celebratory and it could be observed in the educational institutions across the country with the following objectives:
** Highlight the linguistic diversity of our country;
** Encourage usage, not only of the respective mother tongue, but other Indian languages as well.
** To understand and draw attention to the diversity of cultures,’ in India and the consequent forums of literature, craft, performing arts, scripts and other forms of creative expression.
** To encourage the learning of languages, other than one’s own mother tongue.

Competition Details

Accordingly, heads of all the educational institutions under your control may be requested to organize the activities to achieve the above mentioned objectives.

During the day, the following, indicatively, could be taken up by educational institutions, preferably in at least two languages, possibly more:-
Elocution, Debating, Singing, Essay writing competitions, Painting competitions, Music and dramatic performances, Exhibitions, Online resources and activities as well as events exploring the cognitive, economic, social and cultural activities of multilingual society, Exhibitions depicting linguistic and diverse wealth of India.
