Hair transplant can be an expensive procedure. The cost can be prohibitive for the underprivileged but there are many who would desire a hair transplant. As part of our endeavour, Dr. Adhikari is pleased to offer a FREE* hair transplant session to a deserving patient who does not have the capacity to afford it.

Hair Transplant Surgery Techniques : FUT vs FUE

There are two basic hair transplant surgery techniques used worldwide: FUT (Follicular Unit Transfer) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction).

In FUT (Folicular Unit Transplantation), a strip of hair bearing skin is taken from the back of the scalp and dissection under the microscope is carried out to isolate individual follicles. To understand what a follicular unit is, it is important to know that scalp hair grows in clusters rather than individually and these clusters are known as follicles. Basically, a follicle comprises of 1-4 terminal hairs (thick, long and dark hairs), 1-2 vellus hairs (much lighter hair) and their associated glands and muscles.

These follicles are individually isolated by micro-dissection so that the number of hairs is actually much more than the number of follicles that are isolated. In FUT, the donor area of the back of the scalp develops a linear scar which is well concealed by the growth of adjacent hair. Since more personnel can work on a strip that has been taken out and there is quite a good control over the strip, results of FUT are much more predictable and the process is much faster.

In FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), the process is a bit different in that individual follicles are directly isolated over the back of the scalp and taken out followed by transfer. This does not result in the formation of a linear scar. However, the process can be slow and the loss associated with harvesting of the follicles can be considerable. Therefore, FUE is generally reserved for a select few although many hair transplant surgeons exclusively use this method for hair transplant.
