What is IIT Bombay DELTAs FIHAB Competition?

Flameless Reusable Hot Air Balloon Competition 2024 is organized by Design and Engineering of Lighter-Than-Air systems DELTAs-2024 IIT Bombay. This unique event brings together teams of talented engineers, designers, and aviation enthusiasts from across the nation to showcase their prowess in crafting and piloting hot air balloons powered without flames. Last Date of Competition is 9th June 2024.

Problem Statement of FIHAB Competition

** The envelope of the FIHAB should fit within a cube of side 1.5 m after inflation.
** There should be a provision to firmly attach a payload (consisting of several aluminium nuts) to the FIHAB, which will be provide by the organizers.
** The FIHAB must exhibit positive static lift (with the payload attached) within four minutes of “go ahead”, when released from a height of 1 m above the floor.
** In the next two minutes, it must ascend to the ceiling of Lecture Hall Complex-2 Foyer (~ 60 ft high), and return back to the floor in an undamaged condition.
** Each team will be given two attempts, and the highest payload of the two launches will be considered for evaluation.
** The FIHAB that meets all the above mission requirements with the highest payload will be declared the winner.

Objectives of FIHAB Competition

**A panel of expert judges evaluates the FIHABs based on various criteria mentioned below. Beyond the thrill of competition, the FIHAB event aims to promote sustainable aviation practices and inspire future generations of aerospace engineers and innovators.

** By showcasing the potential of flameless and reusable hot air balloon technology, the competition contributes to the advancement of eco-friendly transportation solutions and fosters collaboration in the pursuit of a greener future.

** Teams participating in the FIHAB competition embark on a journey of creativity and engineering ingenuity as they fabricate their prototypes. From selecting lightweight and durable materials to designing efficient heating systems, every aspect of the FIHAB’s construction is carefully considered to optimize performance and safety.

Scoring Criteria of FIHAB Competition

1. Based on Altitude crossed by the FIHAB
Crossing the first floor – 10 Marks
Crossing the second floor – 10 Marks
Crossing the third floor – 10 Marks
Hitting the Ceiling – 20 Marks

2. Payload mass (in g) of the best trial, e.g., if your FIHAB rises touches the ceiling with a payload of 30 g, then your score will be 10+10+10+20+30 = 80 marks

Other Terms and Conditions of FIHAB Competition

** Teams can consist of up to five members, who can be from different institutions.
** You are free to choose any shape and material for the FIHAB envelope.
** Hot air is to be generated using only one Hot Air Gun of 2000 W capacity, which will be provided by the organizers.
** The use of any inbuilt flame producing devices, chemicals, or electronic systems, propellers or motors is prohibited.
** The decision of the judges will be final and binding on all the Teams.
